Our Approach

Therapy that’s personal, practical, and built around you

We believe therapy works best when it feels like a real conversation, not a clinical checklist. Our style is warm, down-to-earth, and collaborative. We’re here to listen, not to lecture. To understand, not to judge. To work with you, not just on you.

Every session is shaped around what you need, meaning some days might be focused on developing tools and strategies, whereas others might be just creating a time and space to be heard and validated. Whatever you bring to the room, we’ll work through it together at a pace that feels right for you.

I also believe in strongly focusing on your strengths, not just your struggles. Yes, we’ll absolutely discuss what’s hard, but we’ll also explore what’s already working, what resilience you’ve already shown, and how to build on the resources you already have.

Therapies we use at Clear Minded Psychology

Our therapeutic approach draws on a range of evidence-based methods, all of which have been proven to work. We’ll use whichever combination makes the most sense for your situation.

Eye-Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye-Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based trauma-focused therapy that helps alleviate distress from traumatic memories in our past. It helps us process the traumatic experience by reducing the emotional distress by using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping. It is a committed process and can help those individuals who struggle to process the past events in talk therapy.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. By identifying helpful thinking patterns and testing them out, you can develop more balanced perspectives and make real changes in how you feel and act. CBT is particularly effective for anxiety, depression, stress, and panic.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT focuses on accepting difficult thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them, while committing to actions that align with your values and beliefs. It’s about building psychological flexibility and learning to make room for discomfort while still moving forward in meaningful ways.

Solution-focused therapy

This approach focuses on your strengths, resources, and what’s already working in your life. Instead of dwelling on problems, we explore what you want your future to look like and work backwards to find practical steps to get there.

Skill building

Sometimes what you need most isn’t insight; it’s skills. We teach practical techniques for managing emotions, communicating effectively, solving problems, setting boundaries, and navigating social situations.

Narrative therapy

Narrative therapy helps you re-examine the stories you tell yourself about who you are and what you’re capable of. By exploring how your identity has been shaped by experiences, culture, and relationships, you can begin to rewrite the narratives that aren’t serving you.

Strength-based therapy

We believe everyone has strengths, even when life feels overwhelming. Strength-based therapy focuses on identifying and building on what’s already working, such as your resilience, your values, and your capabilities, rather than only focusing on what’s broken.

Compassion-focused therapy

Compassion-focused therapy is about developing a kinder, warmer relationship with yourself. Many people struggling with mental health issues are incredibly hard on themselves. This approach helps you cultivate self-compassion, manage self-criticism, and treat yourself with the same understanding you’d offer a friend.

Person-centred therapy

At the heart of everything we do is a person-centred approach. This means you’re not just a diagnosis or a set of symptoms – you’re a whole person with unique experiences, values, and goals. Therapy is a collaborative process where you’re the expert on your own life, and we’re here to support, guide, and walk alongside you.

Motivational interviewing

Change can be difficult, and feeling unsure about it is completely normal. Motivational interviewing helps you explore your own reasons for change, work through mixed feelings, and build motivation from within. It’s a respectful, non-judgmental approach that meets you where you are while supporting you to move forward.

What to expect

First session

We’ll talk about what’s brought you in, what you’re hoping to get out of therapy, and start to explore what’s been going on. We’ll also discuss consent to services, your concerns, background history, and treatment goals. The first session is also aimed to make sure you feel safe and comfortable under my care to commit to further sessions. There’s no pressure to share everything right away.

Ongoing sessions

Most sessions are 50 minutes long, where we’ll work together on goals that matter to you, try out new strategies, and check in on what’s working.

How long will I be in therapy?

The number of sessions varies depending on your individual needs and goals. Some people benefit from short-term therapy, while others prefer ongoing support. Therapy requires consistency, which can be difficult. However the commitment to show up every week or fortnight can become significantly rewarding to your life knowing the it can be hard but you are motivated by the progress.

What makes our approach different

Culturally inclusive and CALD-focused

Being aware of the cultural and linguistically impact on someone’s identity is important to consider in therapy to ensure the service and treatment is effective

Neurodiversity-affirming

We believe in working with neurodivergent individuals, not trying to make them fit neurotypical moulds. Our autism and ADHD support is strengths-based, focusing on building skills and strategies that work for your unique brain.

Safe space for all walks of life

We create a welcoming, non-judgmental space for people from all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. No matter who you are or what you’re going through, you deserve to feel respected, understood, and supported in therapy.

Trauma-informed

We understand that many people carry difficult experiences, and we approach therapy with sensitivity to how trauma can impact your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. We create a safe environment where you’re always in control.

Depth-oriented and reflective

We focus on more than surface-level solutions. Our depth-oriented approach explores the patterns, experiences, and emotional themes beneath your current struggles, supporting meaningful and lasting change at a pace that feels right for you.

Family and system aware

We recognise that individual struggles often reflect broader family dynamics, cultural expectations, or systemic pressures. Where appropriate, we can work with parents, families, or other supports to create lasting change.

Care that meets you where you are

We’re committed to creating a supportive space where you feel heard, respected, and safe. To help make therapy accessible, we offer flexible appointment times, including after-hours and Saturday appointments, telehealth sessions, and support through Medicare and private health rebates.
